St Dominic's Priory School

General Education Training (GET: Grades 8-9) & Further Education Training (FET - Gr 10-12)

Head of Phase – Mrs Deane Loubser

Adolescence has arrived and learning is serious business! So is friendship with others and getting to know yourself: your strengths, areas to be developed and what interests you.

Subjects become more specialized and subject teaching by subject specialist teachers is the norm. We are pleased to have very well qualified and dedicated teachers. However, this is the stage where the teacher is no longer always right, in the eyes of the adolescent! Integrity (especially in the age of Internet plagiarism) and accountability (when a lapse or mistake has been made, the pupil must take responsibility) are part of the learning experience. We ask for parents' support in this.

The curriculum is all the subjects prescribed by the CAPS. In addition we have Religious Education as part of Life Orientation and a choice between Music as a subject and isiXhosa 2nd Additional Language. Music and Drama are offered as part of the Creative Arts subject.

We offer psychometric testing (scholastic aptitude tests and interest profiles) to all pupils in Grade 9 in order to inform the process of choosing subjects for the last phase of schooling. In addition, all our Grade 9s also participate in the international benchmarking tests in Mathematics and English offered through the IEB. These are provided by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Our results compare very favourably with the international and the national participants. For the most part we exceed these averages.

Further Education Training (FET - Gr 10-12)

We are informed by CAPS, IEB and National Senior Certificate requirements and report accordingly. The exit exam is external and we have to comply with laid down requirements. Work that has been done before in all the phases helps to build the capacity of pupils to excel and achieve an excellent Matric result. We adhere to legal minimum requirements to pass, but these are not our expectation. We strive for all our Grade 12s to achieve a Matric pass that gives them access to Bachelor's Degree studies.Support, extra lessons and recommendations to parents and pupils for improvement are applied where our expectations are not met. The Matric Certificate reflects the candidate's results as a Bachelors, Diploma or Higher Certificate Pass.

The subjects we offer are divided into the three main streams, viz. Humanities, Commerce and Sciences.

If you have a clear cut preference and aptitude for any one of these directions, your subject choices become easier. You can select all or most of your subjects from within a certain stream. If you are undecided about your future career choice and have no firm subject preferences, it is possible to select subjects across the streams to allow you as much flexibility as possible.

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you did not do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the tradewinds in your sails. Explore. Dream." ~ Mark Twain

We encourage each student to maximize their opportunities at St Dominic's Priory School so that they can effectively work towards realizing their individual academic potential.
